In Latin American culture there is a dichotomy that exists between machismo and marianismo. These concepts are derived from social ideals of both gender roles.which in turn perpetuate the acceptance and lack of acknowledgment of acts of violence. While these culural beliefs are very common amongst Latinx households, it is problematic to describe these ideas as defining traits of Mexican culture because it becomes stereotypical to think of the totality of our culture as sexist. What is Marianismo?

MANA contributes the leading Latina voice on many of the major issues in the public sphere, particularly in the areas of education, health and well-being, financial literacy, equal and civil rights, and immigration reform.\


Casa De Esperanza

The organization gives Latinas, their children and other women experiencing domestic violence emergency shelter. It also works to provide resources to organizations addressing issues related to sexual assault and sex trafficking. It’s the country’s largest organization for Latinas that is focused on domestic violence.

A set of values and expectations concerning female gender roles. Marianismo emphasizes the role of women as family and home centered. It encompasses the concepts of self-sacrifice, passivity, caretaking, duty, honor, sexual morality, and the Latina’s role as a mother. Historically rooted in Christian values brought to Latin America during colonization; it is a construction of the expected female gender roles based on the Virgin Mary. Counterpart of Machismo.

What is Machismo?

Beliefs and expectations sith respect to the role of men in society; Encompaesses a set of values, attitudes, and beliefs about masculinity. Machismo consists of positive and negative aspects of masculinity, including bravery, honor, dominance, aggression, sexism, sexual prowess, and reserved emotions. Signifies an ideology, a system that is masculinist and heteropatriarchal, promotes the attitude that women should remain in traditional roles, encouraging male dominance over women. Exists in every part of society (control over women's voice, independence, money, etc.).
