The talocrural joint or an ankle joint is a synovial joint located in the lower limb. An ankle joint is formed by the bones of the tibia and fibula (leg) with the talus (the foot). As shown in the below diagram, an ankle joint is formed by three bones - the tibia and fibula of the leg, and the talus of the foot. The tibia and fibula are bound together by strong tibiofibular ligaments. Together, they constitute a bracket-shaped socket that covers the hyaline cartilage. The articulating part of the talus is wedge-shaped as it has broad anteriorly and narrow posteriorly. As shown in the Ankle joint diagram, the ankle joint allows up-and-down movement of the foot. The subtalar joint sits below the ankle joint and allows side-to-side motion of the foot.
