Chlorine is commonly used as an antiseptic and is used to make drinking water safe and to treat swimming pools. As shown in the chlorine properties experiment, the potassium permanganate and hydrochloric acid will result in chlorine gas being evolved. Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4) reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) to form potassium chloride (KCl), manganese chloride (MnCl2), water (H2O), and Chlorine gas (Cl2). Chlorine has a melting point of -100.98 degrees C, boiling point of -34.6 degrees C, a density of 3.214 g/l, a specific gravity of 1.56, with a valence of 1, 3, 5, or 7.
