Special Education Concept Map

All students will have to meet content standards for their grade level. A child that has a disability will have a standard-based IEP written for them to align with grade standards. The IEP will state whatever support, accommodations, or services they will need to meet those standards. Special EducationAccess to grade level content standards.Early intervening services (pre-referral Interventions)Title 1English Language Learners(ELL)Section 504 AccommodationsGifted EducationSpecial EducationPre-referral interventions are meant to be preventative approach that may help a student that is struggling academically or have behavioral issues in the classroom. The interventions should be designed and used by all students that need extra support. Title 1 programs helps improve the academic achievement gap of the students that are low-income or disadvantaged. It will help close the gap of socioeconomic groups. This program helps ALL students with a quality education and reaching state standards. These students may speak English but may struggle with academic language.A ELL program will help them not only speak English better but also take part in social activities and communicate with teachers and peers. Section 504 are plans that schools develop to give the students with disabilities the support that they need. 504 plans make sure the student receive the accommodations that remove barriers and help the students succeed in school.A student that is gifted or talented will need challenging and differentiated educational services or programs that go beyond that of what a school generally provides.by Tracy MunstermanLearning standards are written descriptions of what a student to know and be able to do at a certain stage in their education. The school will need to implement at least two interventions with the hopes that the student will not be referred to special education. These interventions will be documented by the classroom teacher. Federal money funds schools through both Title 1 and Special Education. Even though the funds are used differently they are there to help disadvantaged and/or disabled child. Therefore, a student is able to receive both services. ELL is not a category under IDEA and these students cannot receive special education services unless they qualify under a disability catergory.Section 504 plans differ from IEPs and are covered by different laws. Even though they both have the same end goal, the student to thrive in school, a student cannot have a 504 and IEP at the same time. To qualify for special education a student does not always need to be functioning below grade level. A gifted student may qualify in other areas. They may learn and think differently or have problems socially.
