Dos and Donts in Early Children Telehealth

Do's and Don'ts in EC Telehealth

1. Focus on the therapeutic relationship, and only use the technology needed to maintain that!

2. Consider session length: If you usually have 30 minute groups, change them to 20 minutes to allow staff time for tech setup and fewer moments of transition.

3. Reach out to staff and caregivers more than usual. They need our support and we can help them understand how important music therapy is to keep their child engaged!

1. Don't change your assessment or treatment planning just because you aren't in person.

2. Don't stick to your session plan exclusively - be even more flexible to the needs of young bodies that may need to move around more!

3.Don't forget to engage the grown-ups as much, if not MORE than in person groups. Send them resources for using music outside of music therapy sessions.

Here is a comparison diagram about the education strategy for early childhood telehealth and some music therapy. As for the things that children should follow, firstly, focus on the therapeutic relationship, and only use the technology needed to maintain that! Then, consider session length: If you usually have 30-minute groups, change them to 20 minutes to allow staff time for tech setup and fewer moments of transition. At last, reach out to staff and caregivers more than usual. They need our support and we can help them understand how important music therapy is to keep their child engaged!
