Although there is general agreement on the basic genogram structure and symbols, there are some variations between designers. In the Irish Genogram, the male is noted by a square and the female by a circle. A family between these two is shown by a horizontal line connecting the two. The children in the Irish Genogram are placed below the family line from the oldest to the youngest. It should be noted here that family relationships may describe the emotional bond between people involved in a union. However, the emotional relationship component describes the emotional bond between any two individuals in the Genogram.
