Such Chinese family tree diagrams are very helpful for teaching some non-Mandarin speakers about Chinese families and their structure. As illustrated in the following family tree diagram, yéye and nǎinai are grandparents, bàba and māma are parents, érzi and nǚ’ér are children, and more. Remember that the names of the maternal and paternal sides of the families will be completely different. For instance, the uncle from the father's side will be called shūshu. At the same time, the uncle from the mother's side will be termed as jiùjiu. The same method goes on when we mention the children from both sides.
