The genogram provides a graphic depiction of the family structure and history to the play therapist. The Intake form is an example of the formats and symbols used to express various familial ties. To offer as complete a picture of the family as feasible, the genogram should go back at least two generations and contain all first-order relatives. Several elements should be highlighted on the genogram. It may be beneficial to include unrelated individuals who reside in the same household as part of the genogram. This will, once again, provide a more detailed picture of the family and the nature of their ties.
