The 2018 FIFA World Cup was the 21st edition of FIFAs quadrennial world championship for mens national association football teams. It was held in Russia from June 14 to July 15, 2018, after the country was awarded hosting rights in 2010. The championships were held for the eleventh time in Europe, and for the first time in Eastern Europe. It was the most expensive World Cup ever held, with an estimated cost of more than $14.2 billion, until Qatar surpassed it in 2022. The tournament phase featured 32 teams, 31 of which qualified through qualifying competitions, while Russia qualified automatically as the host nation. Twenty of the 32 had also competed in the 2014 event.
