A work breakdown structure (WBS) is a visual, hierarchical and deliverable-oriented deconstruction of a project. Here is a sample which depicts the "soundscape" project planning. It begins with the identification of the project's deliverables, such as dicovery phase, development of the project, planning, marketing etc.. These deliverables are then divided into smaller and more specific tasks that contribute to the overall success of the project. It is a helpful diagram for project managers because it allows them to break down their project scope and visualize all the tasks required to complete their projects.
