10 THINGS SCHOOLS CAN

DO TO ENABLE A SAFE

RETURN TO CLASSROOM

Here are 10 actionable tips and considerations for

administrators, teachers, and parents about how

to return to school safely.

IMPLEMENT MITIGATION

STRATEGIES

· Social distancing, cohorting, staggered schedules

· Wear masks or face coverings

· Frequent hand washing

· Offer touchless solutions for access points, trash

cans, bathroom faucets, and door openers

· Ensure proper circulation, ventilation, and air filter

systmes are in place

COHORTING

Group students and teachers into small numbers and

structure schedules to ensure groups stay together

throughout the day. Classroom spacing will require

students to sit farther apart or split into smaller groups.

STAGGER SCHEDULES

Stagger schedules to avoid overcrowding by creating

different drop-off and pick-up times and locations, and

also implement staggered bus schedules

COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

Centralized communication is key to delivering timely

health announcements to parents, teachers, and faculty.

COVID-19 POINT OF CONTACT

Designate a POC who understands and enforces all

local mandates and guidance, regularly communicates

with parents and teachers, and is able to lead with

empathy and compassion.

COMMUNITY RESPONSE EFFORTS

Schools should assign someone to be involved in

community response to assess community risk and

prepare unique responses based on risk analysis.

RECOGNIZE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Daily health screenings that offer symptom tracking and

self-temperature checks are a proactive precaution to

limit any potential spread.

TAKE CARE OF STAFF

School administrators should make it a point to

recognize and support teachers and faculty.

Communication, flexibility, and empathy is important to

the emotional and physical well-being of faculty.

PLAN FOR WHEN SOMEONE IS SICK

If someone tests positive, your plan should include:

· Detailed response steps for families, teachers, and staff

· Coordinated contact tracing efforts

· Adherence to the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT

Maintain a healthy physical and emotional environment by

prioritizing facility sanitization and mental well-being of staff.
