A genogram is a visual representation of a person's family history and relationships. It goes beyond a typical family tree in that it allows the makers to see patterns and psychological aspects that influence relationships.
Shapes are used to communicate meaning in a genogram. Males are represented by squares, females by circles, and pregnancy is represented by triangles. A death sign is a cross through the shape. Even pets receive a jersey! The shapes start to reveal how many people there are and what gender they are. We can now add ages, names, and dates of birth and death. As much personal data as is required.
