Each type of thinking map connects a basic cognitive skill with a visual representation. The eight types of thinking maps in the below image are circle maps: for defining or brainstorming, bubble maps: for describing, double bubble maps: for comparing and contrasting, treemaps: for classifying, bridge maps: for seeing analogies, multi-flow maps: for cause and effect, flow maps: for sequencing, and brace maps: for part-whole relationships. When you first begin to use these maps, you will need to tell your child which map to use; as they become more comfortable with the concept, they can choose the kind of map that works for the particular task.
