A system data flow diagram is a graphical representation of data flow through an information system that models its process aspects. It is frequently used as a preliminary step to create an overview of the system that can later be elaborated. A system data flow diagram can also visualize data processing by indicating what information will be input and output from the system, where the data can come from and go to, and where the data can be stored. It does not display information about the timing of processes or whether they will run in sequence or parallel.
