As shown in Relays Schematics, when a relay contact is normally open (NO), an open contact exists even when the relay is not invigorated. When a relay contact is marked as Normally Closed (NC), it is closed even when the relay is not turned on. Applying an electrical current to the connections will change their state in either case. A relay is an electrically powered switch. They frequently use an electromagnet (coil) (contacts) to power their internal mechanical switching mechanism. When a relay contact is open, power is turned on to a circuit when the coil is activated.
