An open floor plan consists of two or more traditional spaces, such as the living room and dining room, to create a larger, grander space. Typically, these rooms would be separated by barriers such as walls or doors, making them feel small and closed off. Since 1990, the open floor plan has been the dominant architectural trend in new residential construction. They've been the goal of many major remodeling projects in older homes: combining the kitchen and dining room, the dining room and living room, or all three into some form of communal living space or great room.
