The FIFA Womens World Cup is an international association football competition contested by the senior womens national teams of FIFA members. Since 1991, when the inaugural tournament, then known as the FIFA Womens World Championship, was held in China, the competition has been held every four years and one year after the mens FIFA World Cup. National teams compete for 31 slots in a threeyear qualification phase under the tournaments current format. The host countrys team is automatically placed in the 32nd position.
