China has been among the world’s fastest-growing economies, with real annual gross domestic product growth increasing 9.5 percent through 2018. After reformist leader Deng Xiaoping announced the Open Door policy in 1978, China’s economic growth surged handsomely. As the China Growth Map suggests, since China began to open up and reform its economy in 1978, GDP growth has averaged almost 10 percent a year, and more than 800 million people have been lifted out of poverty.
